10:00 P.M.

In the beginning of this episode Pete has a patient named Barbara. Barbara is seriously depressed, And Violet has offered a possible quick fix; ECT. The show proceeds to show her laying down while Violet places the electrodes on her head. Barbara is also given anesthesia to help from the convulsions. The ECT cured her depression, and Barbara was a whole nether person; smelling anything, the sky color, and so all seemed new to her. The only problem that was occurring after the treatment was her memory. Barbara could not remember anything up to the treatment. Not only that but she didn't remember her finance Jimmy. Violet was becoming concerned because the treatment isn't suppose to target specific memories. Violet suspect that Barbara was hiding or repression the memory of Jimmy. Then Pete was determine to find out the cause of the hidden memory by asking Barbara to remember what it is that Jimmy did to her. Barbara laughs out loud at the fact that they believe that Jimmy would hurt anybody. Pete and Violet, confused and her statement find out that Barbara intentionally forgot about Jimmy. She doesn't want to be with Jimmy anymore, but doesn't want to hurt him at the same. So she was just going to pretend that she didn't know who he was. Pete and Violet go along with Barbara's wish and tell Jimmy that she can remember him but atleast she's happy.
Barbara was suffering from severe depression and they treated her depression with ECT. It showed briefly Violet placing the electrode on both sides of the patients head (bilateral ECT), and what was going to take place. It showed the side effects of ECT, memory. The cause of retrograde amnesia that lasted probably a few weeks after treatment before completely clearing. This episode relates to psychologial therapies (chapter 15-10 pg. 626) on electroconvulsive therapy.

  1. I think that it is crazy and cruel how they still use this particular type of therepy even today. You would think that since we are in the new millenium someone would have discovered a less painful way to halp another being.Dont understand how this stuff really works or why they think that they could help someone by using it. To me I think it would cause a lot more harm than good.
